Be WISE

Summit on Collegiate Underage and Problem Drinking

The International Institute for Alcohol Awareness (IIAA) was delighted to host its first Summit on Collegiate Underage and Problem Drinking in Frankfort, Kentucky on April 16, 2009. The Summit was facilitated in collaboration with the Kentucky Network and funded by Beam Global Spirits and Wine. IIAA has forged a unique public health and industry partnership with Beam Global to prevent underage and problem drinking. Collaborations and partnerships are a major theme of this event and Beam GlobalÕs participation with public health is forging new ground in the way we address this problem.

The purpose of the Summit was to identify and review strategies and policies in the stateÕs higher education system that contribute to the prevention of underage and problem drinking as well as promote innovative partnerships to prevent underage and problem drinking on college and university campuses. Additionally, the Summit introduced participants to an exciting new web-based resource called Be WISE, which is designed to be a dynamic tool that features evidence-based strategies to prevent underage drinking on the college campus. You may go to www.be-wise.org to view the site and examine its many features.

The outcomes of the Kentucky Summit on Collegiate Underage and Problem Drinking were superb, and IIAA looks forward to hosting additional Summits in the coming years.

Not in Our House

A Nationwide Initiative on Underage Drinking and Social Hosting

Not In Our House, a campaign developed in partnership with the International Institute for Alcohol Awareness (IIAA), The Century Council, funded by America’s leading distillers to fighting drink driving and underage drinking, and Scholastic, was launched in October 2006, in schools located in the nation’s state capitals.

The goal of Not In Our House is to prevent underage drinking in settings where adults are hosting parties and/or providing alcohol. The program is intended to inform adults of the civil and criminal liabilities and related humiliation related to social hosting and/or providing alcohol to underage youth.

The primary target audience for this program is parents of 9th and 10th grade students. Other audiences are adult influencers like school administrators, 9th and 10th grade teachers, coaches, and parent-teacher organization leaders as well as 9th and 10th grade students.

The rationale behind the selection of target audiences includes:

  • Parents and other significant adults have considerable influence on youth
  • 9th and 10th grade students are considered “low-man in the food chain” of status and position
  • High social pressures from peers to drink to be cool
  • There is a void in underage drinking prevention programs focused on 9th and 10th grade students and their parents
  • 9th and 10th grade students are beginning to experience more independence from their parents (driver’s license, etc.)
  • These youth want parents to start letting them go, but rather this is the time that parents need to be alert and engaged

Not In Our House materials have been distributed to 400 high schools (public, private, and parochial) in the 50 state capital cities as well as Washington, DC.
